About Us

Established in 1950, the Murfreesboro Housing Authority located in the City of Murfreesboro and the state of Tennessee is a non-profit government entity. By providing safe and decent housing in a cost effective manner and by partnering with various organizations, we improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods.

Currently, we maintain the following Housing programs:

Public Housing currently has 4 project areas. These project areas are as follows:
Franklin Heights - 140 Units
Highland Heights - 60 Units
Mercury Court - 74 Units
Oakland Court - 76 Units
Westbrooks Towers (*Associated Property) - 230 Units

Expected Rent Family Contribution: approximately 30 percent of income or a choice of flat rate rent.

Flat rate rent is as follows:
One bedroom unit = $330 per month
two-bedroom unit = $390 per month
three-bedroom unit = $450 per month
four-bedroom unit = $510 per month
five-bedroom unit = $570 per month
Westbrooks Towers = 30% of income

*Murfreesboro Housing Authority (MHA) is responsible for management and maintenance of the property. Senior Citizens 62 years of age or older may apply.

When applying for Public Housing please bring in your Birth Certificate and Social Security Card.
There is a waiting list for public housing. There are many factors and preferences that will effect how long you will be on the waiting list. The factors may include age, disability,working or not, and the number of bedrooms you need. Please call Gina Markum at 615/893-9414 ext.28 to get the details about the waiting list.

Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher - 613 Vouchers (includes Shelter Plus Care Vouchers)

MHA Section Eight develops partnerships with private landlords located within Rutherford County to provide rental units to section eight participants. In providing efficient and safe housing for section eight participants, the section eight department insures rental payments are made to landlords, performs safety inspections, and conducts tenant examinations and reexaminations. Participants are also encouraged to attend self-sufficiency programs.

Section 8 Shelter Plus Care (Homeless Program)

MHA utilizes the Shelter Plus Care Voucher Program. The shelter plus care program provides rental assistance to homeless individuals/families with disabilities. Disabilities primarily include mental illness, chronic problems with alcohol and/or drugs, and HIV/AIDES or related diseases. There is a waiting list for this program, and vouchers are limited. You will be notified when your name comes to the top of the waiting list. PLEASE keep us informed of any address change. To qualify for the S+C program, you must be homeless and residing at The Salvation Army (615/895-7069), the Room In The Inn (615/896-7016) or the Domestic Violence Shelter (615/896-2012). You must also be receiving continuing care and support from one of the four agencies listed below:

The Guidance Center (615/895-6051)
The St. Claire Senior Citizen’s Center (615/848-2550)
The Veteran’s Administration Hospital (615/896-5433)
Nashville Cares (800/845-4266)

In order to accept your application for this program, you must bring a letter from the agency that is providing your support. You must also bring a letter from the shelter in which you reside to prove your homeless status. The Murfreesboro Housing Authority must conduct a police and credit background check to determine eligibility for you and all family members over 18 years of age who reside with you. Project Go! and Yield! are programs designed to provide encouragement and educational enhancement to children in the hours immediately following school classes. Neighborhood Network
This is a program designed to help residents overcome their fear of computers and learn Microsoft Office applications and operating systems. Neighborhood Networks centers help improve computer access, advance literacy, prepare residents to take advantage of employment opportunities, and provide access to healthcare information and other social services.
